Coffee is just coffee now

Your coffee tastes strange now, and you cannot quite say why. For years it was not really a drink. It was the opening move, the thing you held while you waited for the cigarette that made the morning actually start. The cup was a prop. So you sit with it and something feels unfinished, like a song cut off before its last note. That is not the coffee failing you. That is the first time in years you have actually tasted it.

Here is what got taken from you without a receipt. Not just the money and the mornings. The coffee itself. And the meal after work, and the ten minutes on the balcony, and the pause between two hard phone calls. Every one of those was a real pleasure with a flavor of its own, and every one got quietly assigned a partner until you could not taste it alone anymore. You did not lose a ritual when you quit. You got one back.

Your mind does not file pleasures separately. It bundles whatever keeps showing up together, then hands the credit to whichever part it noticed most. The cigarette was taking credit for the coffee. It took credit for the break, for the friend on the step, for the first warm light of the day. Undoing that is not effort, it is only repetition without the partner. Every cup you drink alone teaches the bundle to come apart, and then coffee goes back to being coffee, which is plenty.

So do the next one on purpose. Make it properly, sit down with it, and do nothing else while you drink it. No phone, no scrolling, no standing at the counter half dressed. Give it the attention you used to give away. God put real pleasure inside ordinary things and never asked you to pay a subscription for access to it. Drink it slowly enough to notice. Today can be the day you find out what your own coffee tastes like.
